Video On Demand for a Major Cable Company

The client is a conglomerate that operates cable systems and other media properties.

Situation
The massive scale of cable operators' media libraries challenges them to create innovative information linkages and effective personalization models that enables consumers to quickly find music and movies. A major goal was to design the system to be very approachable for beginners while at the same time accurate and sophisticated enough to satisfy music and movie buffs.
Challenge
Design and develop a user-interface application and supporting databases to allow leisure users to browse, search, and playback music and movies from an extensive collection. The system would distribute media databases and associated meta-data around the world, and offer consumers access through a wide range of environments.
Resolution
EC Wise designed the user interface and the supporting data query library in tandem, at the same time as we worked with the operator's database group to put in place an infrastructure that could deliver information on daily acquisitions to globally replicated databases in near real time. The design of the viewer interface application encouraged impromptu exploration and research across both audio and video content. Users can search directly on media display content like director, release date, songwriter, or recording label, and create personalized libraries of complete works or selected clips. In addition, they can peruse biographical artist timelines that link to relevant social context based on thematic and temporal affinities We developed the client application with the C# language using the .Net framework, with the database in Microsoft SQL Server.
